Your water heater works silently in the background, but it requires regular maintenance to function efficiently.

Flush the Tank Annually

Sediment builds up at the bottom of tank water heaters over time. Flushing it once a year prevents this buildup, which otherwise forces the burner to work harder and reduces efficiency.

Check the Anode Rod

The anode rod attracts corrosive elements in the water so they don't attack the tank itself. Check it every three years and replace it if it's heavily corroded.

Test the Pressure Relief Valve

The TPR valve is a critical safety feature. Lift the lever partway and let it snap back. You should hear a gurgle of water into the drain tube. If not, the valve needs replacement.

Adjust the Temperature

Setting your water heater to 120°F (instead of the factory 140°F) prevents scalding, reduces energy consumption, and slows mineral buildup.
